INTRODUCTION From brownies to medicated muscle creams, you can find cannabis concentrates in hundreds of products.   Concentrates are products made from the cannabis plant that have been processed to keep only the most desirable plant compounds (primarily the cannabinoids and terpenes), while removing excess plant material and other impurities. Ounce for ounce, cannabis concentrates have a greater proportion of cannabinoids and terpenes when compared to natural cannabis flowers.   Concentrates can also help increase the potency of your flower. The next time you pack a bowl with cannabis flower, try sprinkling kief on top, or add drops of concentrate oil to cannabis flower before rolling your joint. Cannabis concentrate products can also be consumed on their own. For example, concentrates can be vaporized using a portable vaporizer or dab rig (this activity is referred to as “dabbing”). Dabbing...

Private cannabis stores a game changer in Durham Region

DURHAM — A provincial move to allow private cannabis stores has proven to be a game changer for Durham municipalities and local businesses with links to the cannabis industry. The new Progressive Conservative government in Queen’s Park announced last week that private cannabis stores would be allowed in Ontario after all and they are set to open by the beginning of April, a few months after marijuana is legalized in October. The previous government had planned to operate LCBO-type stores. Tiara Sillet is the owner of Natural Budz, a vape lounge, patient intake clinic and cannabis education centre located in Pickering. She welcomed the news and said she would love to apply for a licence for her business. “In all honesty I was excited but I’m holding back because...

Israel and Canada high on budding medical cannabis ties

Israel, the so-called Start-up Nation, could soon become known as the Silicon Valley of medical marijuana if leaders in the industry have their way. Israel’s medical cannabis sector is flourishing, thanks in part to growing business ties with Canada, which will officially legalize marijuana in October. Hundreds of millions of dollars in deals between Canadian and Israeli companies have already been inked, with investments covering innovative products treating a wide range of health issues—from cancer, to epilepsy, to sleep disorders. Saul Kaye is the man behind the CannaTech conference—one of the biggest international events in the industry—which takes place each year in Israel. “We have about 106 clinical trials running right now in cannabis and nowhere else in the world has been able to do that,” Kaye, who also...

Cannabigerol (CBG): A Minor Cannabinoid With A Major Impact

What Is Cannabigerol (CBG)? When considering the medicine that best suits you, it’s helpful to know the science behind a strain’s cannabinoid profile. The prevalence of lab testing is a great tool and has rapidly become the industry standard. Teams of chemists at locations like SC Labs in California and Sunrise Analytical in Oregon allow patients to see the breakdown of cannabinoids in their medicine, to practically an exact percentage. This trend has lead to an increased interest in the “minor” cannabinoids. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was the focus of breeders for decades until the many medicinal benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) started being published. Discoveries like these spurred an interest in cannabigerol (CBG) and phytocannabinoids (cannabinoids found in plants) as a whole. Cannabigerolic Acid (CBGA) Is The Primary Cannabinoid The ability to produce cannabigerolic acid (CBGA) is what makes the cannabis...

CANNABIS DISTILLATE: WHAT IS IT AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Cannabis distillate is making waves as a new kind of cannabis concentrate. Nicknamed "The Pure," it is an odorless, tasteless extract obtained using high heat extraction. It results in 100% pure cannabinoid. Cannabis has already travelled far from the bud. However, a new production technique is now hitting the commoditised world of weed. It is called distillation. It is also very likely to be the future of commercial marijuana. Distillate - in other words, cannabinoids that have been distilled from concentrate or plant matter - has arrived. Distillation is a technique for creating cannabis extracts that are pure on a molecular level. It is possible to isolate specific cannabinoids. It is also possible to create odourless and tasteless THC (or CBD) that is 99% pure concentrate. This is the next stage...

Terp Juice: Do You Know About Marijuana’s Most Potent Concentrate?

Terp juice might just be the most potent cannabis product out there. A true gem in the marijuana world, you won’t want to miss this dabable. Photo credit “Terp juice” might just be the most potent cannabis product out there. Its potency doesn’t necessarily come from its THC percentage, but from the high quantities of terpenes and phytocannabinoids found in this rich concentrate. A true gem in the marijuana world, this is one dabable that you won’t want to miss.  What is terp juice? Photo credit Have you ever wondered why different cannabis strains have different tastes and aromas? Some are skunky and pungent while others are sweet and floral. The culprits behind these differences are flavor molecules known as terpenes. Terpenes are plant-based compounds found in sappy resins. Each...

Health Canada announces regulations surrounding cannabis legalization

Health Canada just released the regulations that support the Cannabis Act, which will come into effect on October 17. The nearly 400-page document outlines cannabis and industrial hemp regulations at the federal level, but provincial and municipal governments will be able to enforce their own bylaws. Criminal record Government of Canada officials stated that a previous criminal record does not specifically or automatically exclude an individual from participating in the legal cannabis market. Prior convictions will be evaluated according to circumstance, seriousness, recentness, and frequency. Eric Costen, Director General of Cannabis Legalization and Regulation Branch for the Department of Health, said that “all facts will be determined. A trafficking charge doesn’t automatically exclude people from participating under the Cannabis Act.” However, the security requirements prevent anyone with a previous controlled substance offence...

Cannabis in Chile

Chile Marijuana Information Could traditionally conservative Chile be the next South American country to legalize cannabis? Uruguay made history in 2013 by becoming the first country to legalize recreational marijuana across the country, and there are signs that Chile could follow suit. Historically, Chile has been a marijuana-friendly country, and recent changes in law have advocates fighting for its full legalization. Chile has been planting marijuana for medical purposes and conducting medical trials since 2014, but it’s been difficult for patients who have been prescribed marijuana to legally obtain the drug. In December 2015, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet signed a measure to legalize marijuana for medical use. The measure will help remove a lot of the barriers that patients have faced in obtaining medical marijuana. The measure...

Explore the Diverse World of Cannabis Oil and Concentrates

BAILEY RAHN February 26, 2014 “Concentrate” is becoming an ambiguous word in the cannabis industry. It could refer to the wax you vaporize, the tincture under your tongue, or the orally administered THC-free cannabis oil that’s changing attitudes toward cannabis everywhere. The future of cannabis is steering toward these potent concentrated forms, especially as the therapeutic potential of non-smoking methods is realized by the public. Explore Different Cannabis Concentrates Under the umbrella of cannabis concentrates falls any product procured through an extraction process. Solvents (e.g., butane, CO2, ethanol) strip compounds from the cannabis plant, leaving behind a product with cannabinoids packed in every drop. Some types of extracts test as high as 80% in THC, while others are rich in non-intoxicating compounds like CBDdeliver an altogether “high-less” experience. To help refine your cannabis experience, watch Regina in...

Why More Athletes Are Turning to Cannabis

It’s a typical Wednesday evening. After a long run, Andrew*, who works in digital media in New York City, is following his standard post-run routine. Like most runners, he’ll quickly cool down, stretch, drink water, and maybe grab a post-workout snack. Unlike many runners, he’ll also smoke pot. The avid runner and cyclist, whose racing résumé includes the Umstead 100 Ultra, typically lights up immediately before his athletic activities and usually within an hour or two post-sweat session. Andrew isn’t alone in his habit—in fact, combining cannabis and sport has become an underground trend in distance-running culture. Ultra runners such as Avery Collins and Jen Shelton have admitted to running under the influence of marijuana. And former professional runner Chris Barnicle, a cannabis advocate living in Los Angeles, calls himself the “world’s fastest stoner”...
